My 2-cents About Collage

I see collage materials everywhere. And, I mean everywhere! It seems I am always collecting paper ephemera and trash and flyers and menus...and well, you get the idea.
And I've got to do something with all the stuff I come home every day.
Tearing and pasting is so relaxing and fun for me.
I try to make a collage or two everyday. And when I travel I really get excited about making them.
This is on a walk right near my house....

How could I resist tearing off a few of the flyers that are taped up all over?
I couldn't!

Collage materials
I always prefer to use original ephemera to work with. I especially like aged-paper but any interesting paper will do.
Some folks like to work with a photo-copy and hold on to the original. No rules.
I like gritty and.....

pretty is OK too.....
I will collage with just about any paper I get my hands on.

You can use cardboard, mat board, cut up cereal boxes as a base. Use matte medium or a glue stick to glue. You can tear or cut with a scissors. Pick up stuff off the street, use tourist brochures, transit tickets, old photos and letters, stamps, food wrappers......any paper will do...all you need is glue and a base...
Just do it.

Collage
Here's one (about 5x7) made from stuff I tore off a pole.

Three collages received from mail art pals -- eye candy and inspiration. Thanks to Adrienne, Carol and Cleo.

Recommended Books

The Collage Workbook by Randel Plowman is probably my favorite. I recommend it.
Check it out of the library and see what you think.

Also highly recommended --
Collage Journeys - A Practical Guide to Creating Personal Artwork by Jane Davies
(Jane also has a great collage blog and offers online classes)
Collage Techniques - A Guide for Artists and Illustrators by Gerald Brommer
Masters: Collage - Major Works by Leading Artists

Plowman has some really good suggestions to get you started -- like this one. He also offers
online classes.

Kurt Schwitters

Just about my favorite collage artist, Schwitters is an inspiration. If you ever get a chance to see his work in person, don't miss it. I saw a show at the Berkeley Art Museum a while back and seeing his work in person is so much better than seeing it on the page.
But check out the book too!

Kolji magazine

A magazine (from Canada) about collage. You can subscribe. Or ask your library to get it.

My Various Collage Projects

I carry a little notebook around with me and I like to make little random collages with things sitting around on my work table or found in the streets. With the notebook and a glue stick I am always ready to whip out a small collage -- something fun to do when I stop in at a cafe for a cappuccino.

Daily collages

I also like to make a daily collage using things from the day -- these are from a walk I took on the   4th of July, using things from the day (bus transfer) and things fund on the street (fire cracker wrappers).

A recent series of collages I made using vintage French postcards and old family photographs.

I got an idea of sending on my long-gone relatives on a trip to France! I think they would enjoy it, don't you?

Contemporary Collage Artists -- work I
 love....

Allan Bealy -- his book Mud Bath is published by Black Scat press
Michael Cutlip - MichaelCutlip.com
Niko Courtelis - Philatelic Atrocities published by Kat Ran Press
Ivan Chermayeff - Why Stamps? book by Kat Ran Press

You should be able to find all these artists by Googling them.

Another favorite and a mail art pal of mine is Planet Susannia in Germany.
I am so lucky to have a collection of her incredible one-of-a-kind collage books.
You can Google her to find her IUOMA page and her blog....

Allan Bealy/Pamela Gerard collages

Travel table Top
- - just back from an overnight and of course I packed a little travel kit to make mail art and collages.
Travel is so inspiring for collages. every big trip I take I make collages every night and they are are a
terrific souvenir of the trip.

THREE THINGS I LEARNED IN ART SCHOOL

1. Feast Your Eyes -- look as as much art as you possibly can. Go to every collage art show you can. Look at all the books you can find. You will eventually train your eye.

2. Practice Makes Perfect -- make a collage or two or 10 every day. You get better by doing it. That's why students keep a drawing sketchbook and budding photographers are supposed to shoot every day.
There is no doubt that if you want to get good at something, you have to put in the time.

3. Know the Rules before you break them -- take a class. Preferably a real class in a studio but if that isn't possible, take an online class. There is a lot to learn about composition, color, glue etc and a good instructor can get you going.

So, there you go, my 2-cents!
Now go forth and tear and paste and have fun!

Anybody know about any other fabulous collage artist? Any great books? Any classes you recommend? Please let us all know in the comments.
Because I'm still learning too.....

I hope you all enjoyed this post (and thank you to Rachel for asking me to do a collage post). Blogger was driving me crazy and I lost half of what I had written but I stuck it out....so let me know if it was worth all the frustration trying to get this one done...

Call A Friend

I have the best friends -- you can invite yourself over to their studios and get a wonderful fix of art, conversation...and well....come and see........

Take a peek through the door -- my pal j has the most wonderful studio space. There are so many interesting things to look at and I always come away feeling inspired
and maybe a teeny bit envious too....

Open all the drawers, she said.....now, that is a pal. And, not being real shy, I did! Looked inside most of them to see her carefully organized and curated collections.
Beautiful.

I covet these French rubber stamps. She didn't even check my bags on my way out....

Breakfast from Tartine Bakery
j went out and bought breakfast treats and made coffee too....
I might go back again tomorrow....

And, you never leave empty handed when you visit j.
She is the most generous soul and always have something tucked away for her her friends.
These were just what I needed!

A few of her rubber stamps....

I'm thinking I might want to move in....
Wouldn't you?
Thanks to my pal j for letting me look through all her treasures and have a delicious  brunch and  get inspired by her lovely studio....

Since I've shown you my studio space a few times, I thought you might like to see another.
Personally I love looking at where people make art...all art spaces are interesting to me and I love visiting.

I wonder where I'll visit next?
What about you?

Some cool new stamps are coming out very soon (in the USA) -- The Farmers Market Stamps and Janis Joplin. I have already pre-ordered mine.
I've been busy working on lots of art projects which I'll post sooner or later.
Just been busy having a little summer fun (in our chilly 62' San Francisco weather).

Can You Really Have Too Much Fun?

Can you ever really have too much fun?
I'm researching this very question.
Lately I have been having such a good time around San Francisco I haven't had time to to upload my photos (1,500 of them) for the blog or work on any of the pending posts I've got going....
There's a collage post and a visit to a friend's studio post and a post about two really charming postal books and one about some of the projects I've been working on...and....well...let's say I'm behind.

We have been having some nice weather here in San Francisco. Warmer than our usual freezing summer weather and I've been out and about taking some lovely long walks. Always watching for a nice mailbox or two.

And then this weekend was my personal favorite The Vintage Paper Fair.
WARNING:
Stop reading now if you feel faint at the sight of piles of wonderful vintage paper...

I love to be surrounded by so much vintage paper ephemera. There are postcards, posters, vintage stamps, tin types and snapshots, maps and pages torn from old books, First Day Covers and old envelopes.....lots of friendly vendors...

What makes it so great to me (besides being around all that vintage paper ephemera) is that  whatever your budget is, you can find treasure.
All those boxes of b&w snapshots in the photo are .25-cents each. And the postcards on the table are also .25-cents.
There are some expensive items for real collectors but I always find lots of wonderful, affordable treasures to bring home.

Real Photo postcards -- three for a dollar -- the price is right and I think "Stamp Heads" -- don't you?
(Yes, I'm still obsessed)

One friendly vendor has loads of face value vintage stamps -- quite a popular item.

Some of my treasures....I can't resist those beautiful flower postcards (25-cents)...

A Steal!!
I got a very large paper that is a mortgage from Great Britain  and all personally hand-writeen in calligraphy!
Can you believe this? The photo does not do it justice. It is a truly amazing piece,
($5.00)

With three wax seals on it too.......swoon.....

Another hand written beauty -- Japanese, I believe, and an entire book of hand-written calligraphy by a student with corrections in red by the teacher.....

And, no, I don't work for the Vintage Paper Fair. You'd almost think so, wouldn't you? I just love it and never want to miss going when it is happening.
I really don't think it would be a bad idea to plan a visit to SF around the same time the Paper Fair is happening, do you?
Happily, I live here!
Look here to see the VPF's schedule and other locations

and after all that, I got to have a terrific Thai lunch with two great pals...

As if Saturday's event wasn't enough, Sunday night was our July SF Correspondence co-op's meeting at the SF Center for the Book.
Socializing, food, a little wine, an artistamp for our passports....what's not to like?

We had a demo of bee's wax collage.....very interesting..

A little food, of course and show-and-tell and sharing supplies and catching up...a terrific end to the weekend.

I kinda needed to go home and have a martini and calm down after all the excitement...
(good excuse, anyway)

So, here's my stash. Now I get to play with it and make things.  I am going to pull about the Japanese calligraphy book and use the papers in collages.
Maybe hang the calligraphy mortgage on the wall since it is so beautiful.
And I'll send out some of those postcards with vintage stamps.
If you are feeling faint, don't say I didn't warn you.

I have loads more to show you - 1500 photos, after all -- so stay tuned to the blog to see.
(Remember, there is a FaceBook page too with more photos).

So, that was MY weekend, what did you do on yours?
