Come over and I'll Show You How to Make Something....

Lately I've been trying to straighten things up around my studio. Problems are that I like to have everything on display and I also seem to work better when ephemera is out all over and I can look at it and get random ideas.
I love those little stamp bundles (above). I wonder who has the patience to put the stamps in bundles like that? Not me.

There is a special spot for my wonderful Dori Singh mail.....

Mail boxes and mail art - oh my!

Tickets always come in handy for various projects and they are nice to look at too.

I like pretty tin boxes for storage. These beauties are from France (cookie boxes).

Recently added to the vintage wooden ruler collection. Thank you to Scrap.

Hummm....I better get these plastic boxes of stamps off the floor....

$1 at the book sale -- could you resist?

Airmail envelopes and some vintage stationery from Scrap.

See that china bowl with the gold rim? If you are relatively new to the blog you might not  know I received it in the mail. Unwrapped and covered with stamps and my address written on it in Sharpie. Found on my front step - delivered by the USPS.
Coolest mail art ever.
So, you want to see how to make that booklet with no glue or staples?
Here's how I do it:
Tear five pages out of a discarded book. Or, just any five pieces of paper you have (all the same size).

Fold them in half like this.....

Cut ONE of the sheets of paper like this.

See? You cut a slot in the middle of the fold..

Then cut the FOUR remaining sheets like this -- little notches at the top and bottom of the fold.

This is totally easy to do but difficult to take a photo of....You roll the paper with the slots (one at a time) and insert thru the cut in that first sheet and then line up the folds...
then you just tuck the notched part in and the top and bottom...easy really...

I'm just pushing the paper through the slot and when the middle folds line up the top and bottom will just hook in...

And viola! A little booklet you can decorate and send out in the mail.

Go ahead and try it -- it is really easy. Or, just come on over to my studio and I'll show you.
I love company and making things with friends. I hope these instructions are clear enough for you guys to make the books.
(Shout-out to Monica for showing me how to do it)

You could use three - or five - or seven pages, I think....I make little books and filled them with vintage postage stamps and rubber stamps and tiny collages...

So, let me know how you do, OK?
Have fun!

MAKE SOMETHING EVERY DAY!

  1. Pamela, your studio is a treasure trove! I also like to "see" everything I can use and I spread things out and leave them there (or else I tend to forget that I have them), the only problem is no space. You know how it is in Japan. I love your ruler collection by the way! Really cool.

    1. Thanks, Marie. I know how it is in japan and my studio is looking a little like Japan....no room for anything. I had to STOP myself from going to the library sale today. Why don't you come on over and bring those cool Japanese photo albums with you?

  2. Wow. A trip through wonderland! I think this is my third visit and I still don't know what to say. I just keep wondering.

My studio should be friends with you studio. :) Mine isn't in working order yet, but someday. I'll tell you about the new chair in a letter. I need new storage bins but dislike plastic. JC repaired the drawers to . . . There I go again, saying stuff that should go in a letter.

I lost the plot on your demo. I wish for a video version but then I'd feel foolish if I still couldn't do it. Booklets are great ideas for using up all the bits and pieces I've bought over the years. Are there book-folding teaching books one can buy? Sure wish we had a Scraps.

I'm going to knock on your door if I ever make it to San Fran! Won't you be shocked? :) Your welcome mat is always out. It says a lot about who you are. I'm the exact opposite and a little like those fainting goats--I tend to be easily overwhelmed and shy. If I like you . . . it's on! :) If you are creative, and can teach me how to make stuff without expecting me to talk, then Bobbie's your aunty! So, yeah, I'd spend an afternoon with you. :) No vodka necessary.

    Thanks!

  4. I do wish I could come over and play in your studio! But the commute from Florida is just a bit too far...so I will settle for enjoying all your great photos and ideas. As soon as I finished reading your post, I ripped out 5 pages of an old book and made up my first little booklet. Wow! What a clever and simple way to make a book. Thank you (and Monica) for sharing the instructions. Now...what to put in/on it...

  7. I am SO envious of your ability to access Scrap and library book sales. You are so lucky. And of course, I adore those vintage rulers!

Sadly, unlike you, I don't do well in rooms with everything out. To me it's clutter and I lose things. I had something on my work table along with some other things I was working on. Now I've lost it and had to make another embellishment, instead. I'm glad that style works for you because you seem to work well in it! LOVE your studio view.

  8. Hi Elizabeth! I agree I am very lucky to have Scrap and the $1 book sales at the library. That is why my studio is getting a little too filled up. I guess it IS clutter but I like it....My problem is I love to look at everything so I try to display everything but I don't have enough space to display everything...well, you know what I mean.

  9. omg, I was thinking of asking you this exact thing after you recent post - how do you organize things and always keep creating? I am living in a mess because I like to have things out all the time - if I put them away, I forget I have them!

Lately, I've been thinking about leaving more paper-art out on display, your pictures have been inspiring - I'm going to hang some postcards near my desk and see if there's any room on a shelf for more.

    Shipped bowl?? Amazing!

And thanks for sharing Monica's no adhesive book - I see some of those in my future, too!

    Thanks for sharing. :)

    1. Hi tamdoll -- nice to see you popping up here again. I live in kind of a mess too but I do straighten things out for when other artists come over. I like to put up those "ledges" you can buy from Ikea and line up frames on them for display. Did you see my post where you can punch a hole in the corner of a postcard and put them on rings and hang them? Yes, that bowl that was mailed was incredible.....

  12. Cool booklet. Thank you for the instructions! You could also add some encouraging quotes in there, or make a themed one with stamps that all relate to each other, or also add some stenciling and washi tape...thanks for the ideas! I also like the ruler collection. Your crafty space is way more organized than mine, although I've started to organize so I can actually go in there to craft!
