2019 Planner -- and Planners of the Past

I've got to have an old school planner. Yes, I have a smart phone and everything else but you know I like paper. But these ugly ones will never do.......I buy them every year at the Dollar Tree and then I dress them up!

I don't keep journals any more....too busy making collages and books and mail art....but these planners are the next best thing. They are fun to hold on to and look back at what you did -- or didn't do -- year after year. I try to do a lot.

The 2018 Planner is going to bed...

I make two... the smaller is for personal life planning and the larger is for art project planning...

For some reason, I like to wrap them up in a ribbon when the year is done...

I used to make a few of these for various friends but everyone told me that they don't use paper planners....really?
How can that be? We are paper lovers here. So, now I just make them for myself.
Maybe you will want to make one too.

This year I went with a Kraft paper and collage theme -- and I added tabs!
Those plain tabs were just a little...well, too plain... so I added some postage stamps on them. That looks better, doesn't it?
The inside cover of the art planner....
The back cover

These are the two I just finished up.
A vintage rose on my personal planner..

Inside cover
I just finished them in time because I've got lots of things to write inside already...

(thanks to CJ for the Asian collage)

Like lunch dates!!!!
(This is pork belly ramen at Coco's in SF.)

And I have to write all the Vintage Paper Fair dates...of course! And friends are coming to visit SF and I am going to travel and there are those mail art meetings every month....
Lots of places to go and people to see!
So, what do you think? Are you a paper planner person?
You could do the same thing by covering a notebook and making lists! Did I mention I love lists?
Hummmmm....maybe I need another one for making lists?

So, what's in your plan?
Hope you have some fun things to look forward to and maybe some trips in planning stages.
I'll keep you posted!

    1. Thanks, Mary -- there isn't too much to see yet. I add washi tape and rubber stamping in it to start and I write a lot of notes to myself about art ideas I have....I am always thinking up projects and I write them down so I don't forget them. I also list what I send people -- like a zine addition -- so I don't send the same thing twice....
Many thanks for your comment too....

  2. I like paper too, my constant is a bog desk calendar, the digital ones are secondary. ;o)

  3. That is a really cool idea to take something like a nondescript planner and personalize it like that.

    2. Happy 2019 to you, too! I'm still here... 2018 was a tough year time-wise and I created almost no mail art. Trying to find a way to change that this year, we'll see how long that lasts.

  4. I don't and never have used a planner. And I am one of three people over the age of seven who still doesn't have a cell phone. I have a calendar I dress up with things I've done that day and I write notes in the margins of things I'm planning and quotes I find interesting. Having said that, your covers are simply incredible. I think they are beautiful and I adore them.

  5. I have a home paper planner and a work paper planner. Then, there is the paper planner in which I document mail sent to my daughter at college. I love it all!

  6. How in the world could someone NOT use a planner?! Writing things down puts them in my head. I've used a planner since the beginning of time. I actually started with the Time Index system which was later bought by Franklin planner. My Franklin planner started to make me feel old a few years ago, and the paper seemed to be getting thin and cheap (I am a paper snob). So, I made my own inserts and experimented with different sizes of planners. Then I tried a bullet journal, which I loved, but got tired of making my own custom planning pages all the time, so I then started using a Traveler's notebook. I felt that did not have enough room for me, though, so this year I am using another Japanese Planner, the Jibun Techo. So far, so good. I track all my personal and work items in the same planner to avoid confusion. I also still keep a notebook for jotting things down, tracking voice mails, etc. I think eventually I will go back to the bullet journal because I just love having my own custom-designed page that works for me! Your planner is lovely, BTW.

    1. Dawn -- many thanks for your comment. Of course we need planners! We got a lot going on, right? Plus, they are nice to have. I haven't even tried those other systems since I have been hitting up the Dollar Tree for years....it's all good.

  7. This post - like all of your blog articles - is on point. I absolutely love my iPhone and use my iCloud calendar but I also love and use my paper planner. I've been loyal to Kate Spade 6-ring personal planners (they have gorgeous illustrated planner pages every year) but recently treated myself to an upgraded, larger size Louis Vuitton GM Agenda Planner. Like you, I personalize my pages with washi tape, have a tabbed section for my postage stamps(!) and use stickers for making my days pop. I use thin Uniball .5 ink pens from Japan to write inside my planner and pair it with colored mechanical pencil doodles and writings as well. Studies have shown that writing things with your handwriting helps with memory improvement and must work. I've used a planner all my life (there's an 8th grader inside me that refuses to grow up!) and can recall dates and experiences quite easily! Your post is also inspiring because I am reminded to personalize my paper planner I use at local farmers markets and art shows for my paper goods business. How will I remember? Well I am going to add it to my planner...

    1. Hey! Thanks so much for that interesting comment -- I'd like yo see your planners. Oh yes _ I use those think pens like Micron or Uniball too. Pens are important too. And thank you for the delightful card and delightful photo -- much appreciated.

  8. Yes, to paper planners! I save mine from year to year too. This year I bought one from an artist friend who puts together whatever pages you want interspersed with her art, but there is plenty of space for me to personalize it as well. I also keep a journal for incoming and outgoing mail art. And a small Dollar Tree calendar in my purse which definitely needs some attention after seeing what you have done.

    1. Yes!!! I knew some of you out there would agree with me about a paper planner. But uh oh -- you need to fancy up that Dollar Tree planner in your purse right away -- and I know you have the talents to do it.

  9. Are the original covers plastic? Did you use double sided tape to make your kraft paper stay? They look fabulous!!

    1. The covers are plastic but I take them off and throw them away! Under the plastic is a nice cardboad-type paper ready to glue on.
