This Time It's Japan

Hanging out in the studio on a rainy afternoon......who should I send on a trip this time?

I love passports -- have I already said that? Well, it's very true. I love the covers and I love the stamped pages even more. It's a sad passport with no stamps in it. (But no worries, I can add my own stamps to cheer things up)
This one has seen some travel.

I'm finding, with making my altered passports, a lot of the stuff I've collected over the years is coming together.
So great to find the perfect use for things.....like this old Japanese paper...

First off, I always change the passport photo to one I like better...I added in the black & white photo.

I bought an old family photo album from Japan at the Pasadena Flea Market years ago and found the perfect use for some of the photos....they pop out very easily and are moving in to their new home...

See what I mean?

I might add in some Japanese language flash cards too....you never know...

My faux passport stamps are getting a good workout  this afternoon....

I always leave the real ones alone.

Here's an almost finished page - turned out quite nicely I think.

All this Japan travel (in my mind) make me really need some ramen so I had to go off to Japan Town and get a bowl.
I wonder where I will go when I work on the Russian passport?
We do have Russian markets in SF and I bet we have a Russian restaurant too.
But first I need to finish up with Japan....

A big thank you and shout out to DD, JU and GM for giving me some passports to work on. You guys are just so great.
I don't feel happy unless I have some passports sitting around waiting to be altered.
I am seriously looking for a French passport. I'm just putting it out there.

So, I've been busy altered passports, going to co-op meetings, making mail art, visiting Scrap hitting the Hero Arts Flash sale....

& You????
What are you all up to these days?
Do tell.

  1. I love the flash cards. Adds just the right touch. I wonder where you have these displayed in your workspace. They need an entire shelf all to themselves!

    1. margarete -- I agree -- they do need a whole shelf and little stands to hold them open! But I have only finished two so I will wait till I finish more of them to set them up......

  2. I have a TON of flash cards, but have never, ever seen any in a different language. These are simply stunning. I enjoyed every photo you shared and enjoyed following your thought process as you created the perfect page.

where in the world did you get those faux passport stamps? I'm having stamp envy and I'm not even what I would call a stamper.

This is wonderful, and I would LOVE to join you for real ramen, too.

    1. Elizabeth -- really? I have flash cards in Greek, French, Russian, Spanish, Chinese....well, you get the picture. I can never resist picking them up and I found most all of them at the library book sale....
You know, I can't remember where i got all those faux passport stamps. I am pretty sure a certain friend mailed them to me.......lucky me. (JK was that you?)
I am so glad you like my pages. I am really enjoying this project since I have such a great love of travel.

  3. Such a great use for the vintage photos! And the old Japanese paper is amazing. What a cool project to bring all these ephemera together! Are you still thinking about planning a workshop? I would love to participate. I found some passports to play with on ebay :)

    1. We could maybe have an informal workshop, BaLadiNe (maybe Grace would come too?). Just collage and play with passports in my studio -- you could use my faux stamps. I troll eBay for them too but the prices seems so high. I really want a French and Chinese passport to play with......(you can message me through the "contact me" form on my blog)

  9. What wonderful pages in your passport. The calligraphy is such a work of art...and those flashcards! I've been busy with several art challenges on IG, volunteering at the Succulent Garden, having art playdays with various friends. And, I mailed out the MMSA Rolodex swap which you should be receiving any day now (fingers crossed).

    1. Thanks so much Garci! And that UK passport you sent me -- BIG thanks. I am thrilled. (I am still going to mail you something nice....the election results have really thrown me off my game). Thanks for continuing to look for passports for me too -- you get to way more estate sales than I do so I figure my luck will increase with you looking. I am looking for vintage ephemera for you.....

  12. These are so cool. I found about a half dozen vintage tourist photos of India at Scrap Baltimore - if I ever find an Indian passport I'll have something to put in it!!! Lots of ideas brewing!

    1. Michele -- ooooh I am so jealous of the India photos. I have been looking for tourist India pix. They would work using an American passport too -- just think of an American going off to India for the Grand Adventure! I have been working on another altered passport today -- for a little boy.
